Darren Stewart, proprietor and leading carpenter of AAA Old School Carpentry, has over 23 years experience in all aspects of carpentry and building work in general.
Darren's journey into woodwork began as a sixteen year old teen hitch hiking a lift to a martial arts class back in Scotland. After being offered a lift from Thomas Thompson, the managing director of JD Thompson and Sons Maybole Ayrshire in Scotland, a friendship and apprenticeship ensued.
During the 8 years Darren worked for this small (at that time), but very respected heritage specialists and building contractors (JD Thompson), Darren was lucky enough to be trained the 'old school way'. Using very limited power tools, if any. In this fashion work was carried out to very exacting standards, as was required by their list of prestigious clientele, notably the national trust (of Scotland) and historic Scotland. Training was given by a few of their tradesmen, credit being mainly given to Andrew Mc Kissock, who's skills as a joiner had to be seen to be believed!
After the training phase Darren and his colleague and good friend David Alexander were for a good number of years solely responsible for all heritage work carried out at the national trusts flagship properly 'Culzean Castle' Darren felt very privileged to have had this opportunity.
After leaving the Thompsons to further his knowledge in the modern world of carpentry. Darren worked with his friend David for many different companies specialising in, double glazing, roofline work, kitchens, new construction and eventually finishing up his career in the UK by working for a professional tree house building company 'Peartreehouse '.
After arriving in Sydney Australia on Anzac day 2001 , Darren worked for a heritage builder in Glebe for a few years before subcontracting to a local kitchen renovation company in Taren Point. Darren also did freelance work for other builders including assisting home owners and home builders with carpentry needs in the ground up construction of new homes and renovations of existing homes.
At almost 40 and being a father, Darren now feels the time is right to make his advanced woodworking skills available in his business 'AAA Old School Carpentry' which was established in 2010 and is what this website is all about.
